Groups
Alpacon's Groups feature allows administrators to organize and manage users and servers within a Workspace using logical groupings.
By assigning users and servers to groups, you can implement flexible and scalable access control policies across your infrastructure.
Group Structure
Each group consists of two core components:
- Servers: A list of servers registered to the group
- Members: Users who are part of the group
Default Group
When a Workspace is created, a default group named Alpacon users is automatically generated.
- All new users and servers are initially assigned to this group by default
- Users within the default group have access to all servers also registered to the group
- The default group functions as the shared resource pool unless custom groups are configured
Why Use Groups?
Groups provide several key advantages:
- Access Control: Restrict access so that only specific users can access specific servers
- Efficient Management: Assign permissions at the group level rather than per user or server
- Enhanced Security: Enforce the Principle of Least Privilege by limiting access based on roles
For example, if your operations team and development team manage different servers,
you can create separate groups to ensure that each team has access only to the relevant infrastructure.
